Art of Better Living
“Those who educate well are more to be honoured than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.
Now a days, people are very fond of finding happiness in materialistic possessions. As a result, they are becoming self-centred and self-serving on the contrary, the goal of this institution is to make a child a better human being. So here the teachers develop the skills as well as values and instill values and ethics in a child’s life by providing learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
Being self reliant :
The children here are taught to rely on their own powers and abilities through the following practices:
Yoga: Yoga is an integral part of Health and Physical education. The benefits of yoga is manifold. Thus, the school has absorbed it its curriculum.
Gardening: Nurturing hobbies and interests is a great way to discover one’s hidden talents. A school garden is a powerful environmental educational tool. Through gardening, students become responsible caretakers and a learner of a wide variety of plants.
Weaving: In the coming session, Douglas has decided to include ‘weaving’ in its co-curriculum. Children are enthusiastic to learn this new skill. They will also learn to use as many recycled materials as possible.
Book-binding: ‘Book-binding’ is a new area to be self reliant. The students can not only bind their new books but also give a new look to their old books.
Contribution to the society:
Community and social development lessons do not receive the attention of academic achievement, nevertheless they are as crucial as reading and writing.
Community service: Every student of this school is built on the same core values that encourage him to develop a social conscience and become an active member of the global community.
On the founder’s day celebration the school took an initiative to help the less privileged section of the society through ‘Operation Hope’. The Primary wing of the school collected money for them through raffle sheets. Everyone including all the staff members came together to make their world a better place.
Environmental protection: Every year, Douglas celebrates ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyan’ and ‘Vanmahotsav’ in the school. In the ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyan’, students clean the school premises with the help of the teachers and to mark the occasion of ‘Vanmahotsav’, children plant saplings in the school garden. They take a tour of the local schools and offices with posters and headgears made by them with recycled papers and plant saplings there too. These are the learning experiences for them which they thoroughly enjoy.
The Barrackpore Cantonment Board has honoured this effort of Douglas by bestowing on it the award for the Best Eco-friendly school.
